The Oxford dictionary defines ‘headspace’ as a person’s state of mind. On a day-to-day basis we often refer to headspace in terms of ‘room to think’ or ‘time to process’. Never having enough headspace, can have negative consequences both personally and professionally, such as poor decision making, stress and exhaustion. When your mind is overloaded, there is little room for creative thinking, innovation and problem solving. It can also be difficult to see new opportunities or be positive when others in your team suggest new or better ways of working or need your considered view on a situation. The ‘now’ has to be good enough, there is no capacity for change.
Affording yourself headspace and time out to think shouldn’t be a luxury, it’s very important for your general health and wellbeing. Albert Einstein suggested that “Creativity is intelligence having fun” and making time to innovate and drive your business forward brings a sense of control, achievement and ambition – all destined to make you feel great and be a positive person to be around.
Here are some tips and practical strategies to help you free up your mind.
1. Declutter your mind with a brain dump – too many thoughts create mental overload.
✅ Every morning or evening, write down everything on your mind (tasks, worries, ideas). Prioritise what is truly important and let go of non-essentials.
2. Delegate or automate tasks – you don’t need to do everything yourself.
✅ Offload repetitive or time-consuming tasks to someone you can trust
✅ Use automation (eg scheduling apps, email filters, invoicing software).
3. Create boundaries to protect mental energy – constant distractions kill productivity.
✅ Set no-interrupt zones – block time for deep work.
✅ Say no more often – only commit to things that align with your goals and responsibilities.
✅ Limit social media and notifications – use “Do Not Disturb” mode when working.
4. Take intentional breaks – resting isn’t laziness—it’s essential for focus.
✅ Go for a walk – physical movement clears mental clutter.
✅ Power naps – 10–20 minutes can reset your brain.
5. Step back and reassess regularly – reflection prevents burnout and keeps you on track.
✅ Weekly check-ins: “What’s working? What needs to change?”
✅ Take a day off (or a short trip) to reset mentally.
✅ Visualise success – Keep your long-term vision in mind.
